You may wish to add a trip to the active Arenal Volcano to your itinerary. It can be done as a day tour or an overnight stay from San Jose or as a side trip on your way to the Beach from San Jose.

We recommend that you spend a night at one of the comfortable Hotels or Lodges near Arenal. They all have rooms well situated for viewing the volcano and most have terraces or balconies for that purpose. Arenal’s classically shaped cone is a magnificent sight and, on a clear night, the volcano can put on a breathtaking light show. Hear the explosions and feel the ground tremble – all from a safe distance of course. The Tabacon Spa & Hot Springs is not to be missed. Soak and play in a series of pools fed by thermal springs from the volcano. Sidle up to the bar in the main pool and relax with a cold drink while enjoying a perfect vista of Arenal. A wide variety of Spa treatments are also available. An open air restaurant will allow you to continue viewing the volcano through dinner.

From San Jose, a leisurely four hour drive will give you plenty of time for sightseeing (we will provide a list of recommended stops) while traveling from the city lights to the lights of Arenal Volcano. After checking in at your hotel you may wish to seek out the hot springs or just enjoy the view from your room. Rooms in the Arenal area range in price from $110.00 to $200.00 per night for 2 persons.

After leaving Arenal Volcano, you will have a scenic ride around Lake Arenal and on to the Pacific beaches. An SUV or a van is necessary for this part of the trip.
